The city is offering a $500 reward for information about vandalism of 80 headstones in Riverside Cemetery, some of the toppled stones weighing as much as 1,000 pounds. At approximately 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug.22 city staff were notified of potential vandalism at the cemetery at 1015 Gull Road. Investigatorsfrom the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety determined that 80 headstones had been affected in total, a level of vandalism”unprecedented in either of Kalamazoo’s city cemeteries,” a news release said. City staff will be seeking estimates of costto have the headstones that were not broken moved back into place. Headstones that have been chipped, scratched, broken, or otherwise damaged will have to remain as is unless the decision is made by the family to file an insurance claim or pursue legal action. City staff and Kalamazoo Public Safety are asking forhelp in identifying the perpetratorsof the vandalism, believed tohave taken place sometime between Saturday, Aug. 20 and Monday, Aug.22.
